Summer 2005

ello everyone...

Criminally negligent – I know – haven’t updated this page in awhile, but I have 3,400 excuses – all good. Lucky for you, I’ll skip the list and get right to it...

Chicago Blues Festival was fun this year. It’s always great to see old friends, and of course, hear some good blues. I have to hand it to the organizers: they continue to put on a great show for free and we audience members are the lucky ones – we get to see and hear the artists, without all the incredibly tricky negotiations and effort that was put into getting them there. Pretty cool for us.

Honeyboy Edwards had a big bash for his 90th at a downtown club, courtesy his long-time friend and collaborator, Michael Frank of Earwig Records. Hubert Sumlin made appearances with Bob Margolin much to everyone’s delight. Pinetop Perkins appeared again – ever frailer, but still rockin’. Seems so many of our blues heroes and heroines are growing older beneath our worried eyes, and dearer too. It’s impossible to describe the hundreds of smiles during the festival, the happy parties in the clubs afterwards every night. And atop all that – the reunions with distant friends – every year more memories added to our personal scrapbooks. I probably won’t try – so many others do it well. But I did want to share with you some wonderful pictures. I’ll save a few good ones taken by me for a bit later. First – here are some fine shots taken by my friend Ian Angus – a Canadian with an excellent eye for the shot, and someone willing to let me post the pix here. Jef Jaison...another of the fine photographers always in the sweet spot, hasn’t yet been bribed to let me use his, but that’s because so many of them adorn a magazine here and there. I’ll keep bribing... Meanwhile, enjoy these pictures and watch for more coming soon.

On another note, let me recommend checking out anything coming out of the Delta Groove label on the left coast over there. I’m pretty excited about that company’s solid delivery of the real thing lately. More on this later...maybe even an artist article. Keep being yourself...no one is better equipped.
